Making virtual meetings more successful

“Zoom fatigue” is a term that has crept into our lingo, given that so much of our collaborative work-from-home activity is done through online real-time video sharing tools like Zoom, Webex and GoToMeeting. In our district, we’ve been holding our monthly Commissioner and Roundtable meetings via Zoom since March, and it has largely been successful …

Seven ways to improve your committee meetings

The unit committee is where the business of the pack or troop takes place. While the Scouts are busy doing the things Scouts do, the adults are taking care of things like finance, logistics, equipment and recordkeeping. And just like any other committee, meetings are unavoidable. In fact, we’re expected to meet monthly to help …

Making meetings less painful

Scouters seem to be addicted to meetings. In your unit, you either conduct meetings with the youth (den and pack meetings, for instance), or hover way in the background during troop and patrol meetings. We have meetings of our own, too – committee and leader meetings, district committee and commissioner meetings, Roundtable, and all sorts …

Ideas for better meetings

Hopefully you’re rested up and ready to head back into another year of active Scouting. Along with it comes our monthly committee meetings – pack, troop, crew, district – there are lots of meetings we have to endure and survive! There are ways to make meetings run more smoothly and be more productive. Here are …

Why do people attend meetings?

If you had to identify, in one word, the reason why the human race has not achieved, and never will achieve, its full potential, that word would be ‘meetings.’ The humorist Dave Barry pretty much had his finger on the pulse of things with that observation. Economists seem to have a good grasp on the …

Youth Protection Training

Stay on top of Youth Protection Training. Currently, the training must be taken every two years, and if a member's training has expired, they are no longer considered registered. While many councils send reminders to leaders whose training is about to expire, it's best to check your unit's training records in my.scouting.org and remind anyone whose training has expired or is about to expire to retake the course as soon as they can. It's simple: Just go to my.scouting.org and sign in to take YPT.

May reminders

Summer camp is almost upon us!
  • Keep a close watch for updates from your council regarding summer camp scheduling changes or cancellations.
  • Reconfirm your roster for summer camp. Don't forget your recently crossed-over Scouts.
  • Remind parents of health form and medical checkup requirements.
  • Make sure final payments are paid when they are due.
  • Confirm commitments from adults who will be attending camp. Make sure you have at least two adults in camp at all times.
  • Remind all adults of youth protection training and other clearance requirements.
  • Arrange for enough transportation to get Scouts and equipment to and from camp.
  • Cub Scout leaders: Promote day camp and resident camp options and register with your council as appropriate.
  • Also finish your summer activities planning and promote to your families. Tell them about the Summertime award, which can be earned by any Cub Scout who participates in a Scouting activity in June, July and August.
