I’d like to continue the series of posts following up on my presentation at last fall’s University of Scouting, in which I offered some suggestions on how committee chairs could better serve their unit committees. We can do this is by viewing our responsibility the way we encourage the boys to: as servant leaders, primarily concerned with the well-being and performance of others on the committee. …if it weren’t for the adults!

Recently, a fellow Bobwhite tweeted a comment about something he heard at his troop meeting that evening. One of the Webelos Den Leaders visiting the meeting had been impressed by the fact that the elected youth leadership planned and ran the meeting, and plan and conduct the campouts and the annual program. Responsibility

Happy New Year, fellow Scouters!  As we enter January, many troops will be holding their youth leader elections and embarking on another six months on the bumpy road to leadership development. Every troop has its own way of selecting candidates and conducting elections, and the Scoutmaster should consider helping the process along by encouraging the boys to elect patrol leaders and the Senior Patrol Leader from a pool of responsible candidates.
