Summer camp: after you’re home

Now that summer camp is over, you’re rested and have your dirty laundry (and your son’s) all washed and put away, it’s time to tidy up the odds and ends needed to close out your camp experience and lay the groundwork for next year. Continue reading “Summer camp: after you’re home”

Homesickness shouldn’t spoil summer camp

Homesickness is an issue every year at summer camp. Usually it affects first-year campers. It need not be a problem if you properly prepare your Scout, and you observe certain precautions yourself. Here are a few articles that discuss the issue: Continue reading “Homesickness shouldn’t spoil summer camp”

Youth protection in the forefront

BSA has taken steps recently to ensure that all registered leaders receive training in youth protection.

After a century developing the nation’s premier youth program, finally there are provisions to help ensure that many of the adults who deal with youth know the rules that we are expected to follow to keep our children safe from abuse. Continue reading “Youth protection in the forefront”

Training for the new Cub program

We interrupt the summer camp discussion to talk a bit about the new Cub program, Fast Tracks, that goes into effect nationally this fall, and specifically to talk about the training that leaders can expect to receive. Continue reading “Training for the new Cub program”

Getting ready for summer camp, part 3

In the first two parts of this series, we talked about the troop committee’s function in helping the troop and its scouts get ready for the annual trip to summer camp. Now it’s time to put it all together for the actual summer camp week. Continue reading “Getting ready for summer camp, part 3”

Youth Protection Training

Two years ago the BSA rolled out a new mandatory Youth Protection Training course, and all adults were required to take it, regardless of when they had last taken YPT. Since it's been two years, those initial trainings are now expiring. Check your unit's training records and remind anyone whose training has expired or is about to to retake the course as soon as they can. It's simple: Just go to my.scouting.org and sign in to take YPT.

February reminders

  • Confirm dates for Cub Scout crossover ceremonies. Make plans to attend and provide support.
  • Remind troop families about early deadlines for summer camp registration and deposits
  • Assist Scoutmaster in identifying candidates for advanced youth leadership courses (NYLT, NLS, NAYLE)
  • Consider candidates for district-level volunteer recognition and submit nominations prior to the deadline.
